HOW

Together with local residents and stakeholders, we will renovate and revitalise local reservoir systems in and around the Cockpit Country, equipping them with modern filtration systems, replacing damaged pumps, and building community access points.

The first phase of our initiative focuses on the three reservoirs located in the Trelawny mountain area in the villages of Litchfield, Joe Hut, and Green Town.

PROJECT SITE

The system comprises two Hillside Rain-Harvesting Reservoirs and one River Dam. The two reservoirs, Litchfield and Joe Hut, are situated on separate hillsides in the Litchfield Mountains. The Green Town River Dam is located in a ravine beneath the Litchfield Mountain. Currently, none of these systems are fully operational.

Both the Litchfield and Joe Hut reservoirs are equipped with 80,000-litre cement tanks and rain-harvesting areas. Each harvesting area features a wide concrete pavement built into the hillside, which channels rainwater into a cement tank positioned at the base of the slope.

The river running through the Green Town ravine is dammed, providing a reliable year-round water supply. The Green Town Dam is outfitted with a catchment area, a large water distribution pump, and a pump house. Additionally, it has a 3-kilometre pipeline system that supplies water to the Litchfield and Joe Hut reservoirs during the dry season.

 WATER FILTRATION

After restoration each reservoir will be connected to a newly installed water filtration plant. These plants are located at central points within the village for easy community access. Our water filtration- and purification process is quite comprehensive which is why we have created a video where we break down the technicalities.

WATER QUALITY TESTING

While the government tests only chlorine levels at schools and health centres, we are dedicated to offering comprehensive water quality testing. Our facilities will check for chlorine, bacteria, heavy metals, and other pollutants. These testing services will be available to everyone in the community, enabling residents to have their household water tested and analysed for safety and quality.

DISTRIBUTION

Water will be distributed through mobile delivery in reusable 19-litre containers. These will be delivered to distribution centres as well as directly to homes of residents with limited mobility. This operation will adapt strategically and rely on active involvement from local communities.

Water for private use will be sold at cost where all profits generated will be reinvested into the growth of the Jamaqua project.  All public institutions such as schools, churches, police stations, health clinics and wellness centres will be provided with free water.

CLEAN ENERGY

Following the operationalization of our filtration and testing facilities, we will prioritise powering our plants and buildings with 100% green energy. By reusing the reservoirs’ rain-harvesting areas and equipping them with 50 kWp/h of solar panels, we will create mini solar parks. Each solar park will generate sufficient energy to operate between 5 and 6 filtration and testing facilities. Any surplus energy will be fed back into the Jamaican electric grid.

IMPROVE AND ADAPT

We are committed to constant improvement, welcoming feedback from all stakeholders. As we expand to new areas in need of water infrastructure, we will continue developing skills and expertise to preserve Jamaica’s unique ecosystems and provide sustainable water solutions for future generations.
